Quaker Meeting
| This concert of "witnessing"
or "testifying" musicians launches this project which is concerned
with examining silence in music as an equal partner with sound. After attending
many Quaker Meetings over the past 10 years, I have come to cherish silence
as a means of expression equal to that of sound, whether as speech or music.
As the Quakers themselves have expressed: "Hear our silence." Quaker Meeting is the musical equivalent of an actual Quaker Meeting, which consists of an hour of meditative silence with the occasional "interruption" by a Friend (Quakers refer to themselves as Friends), who is moved to deliver a message that the Light (God) has inspired within him or her. The number of "interruptions" or "testimonies" in a Quaker Meeting vary wildly from meeting to meeting, but all testimonies are expected to be genuine expressions of what God is saying through the congregant. A performance/meeting must be kept strictly within the limits of a given
time frame, and silence plays an equal if not greater part in the listening
experience over the given time. Musicians like Friends must only play
when truly moved to "speak" and musicians join each other only
in mutual silence... only one musician may "speak" at a time.
This should make for a unique musical experience. |
